Papers and presentations are expected to discuss how new technology would transform the way people make or develop creative content and how law and regulations would deal with such phenomena. The topic includes the use of evolving forms of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning software and how these new technologies give effect to different kinds of creative content such as text, song, movie, photos, and data-mining. For example, papers and presentations may explore how generative AI learns and creates and what it means for existing copyright material, but also consider the way that humanity could learn, teach, or adapt utilising such technology and the implications for legal rights and benefit to society. The conference will also accept papers exploring challenges to established copyright doctrines such as idea-expression dichotomy, fact-expression dichotomy, fair use and first-sale, moral rights, as well as the meanings of familiar concepts that include “authorship”, “transformative use” and “the right of communication to the public”.
APCA invites submissions of papers for the conference (apcaconference2023@gmail.com). Please submit an abstract of your proposed presentation (max. 200 words) by 6 October 2023, including the author’s name, title and affiliation. Acceptance of abstracts will be on a rolling basis so don’t wait until the deadline!
Scholars of all levels of experience are invited to submit proposals. We will strive to achieve diversity of representation across the Asian Pacific in the selection process. Participants may eventually submit papers to be published in a 2024 special conference issue of Computers & Law, The Journal for the Australian and New Zealand Societies of Computers and the Law.
